People often mistakenly assume that a language is at risk of extinction simply when the number of speakers declines and dies out. However, more often than not, languages are endagered when the speakers (particularly the younger generation) opts to use a more dominant and mainstream language.

According to Ethnologue, of the 175 indigenous languages of the Philippines, 35 are considered endangered (31 threatened, 4 shifting), 11 are on the brink of extinction (5 moribund, 5 nearly extinct 1 dormant), and 2 are extinct.

Through Wikapedia, we aim to help mitigate the language  crisis in the Philippines by:
-acting as an open library and resource platform for languages that are in critical condition
-educating and promoting active usage of the language, particularly amongst the younger generations
-raising awareness of this issue to the rest of the nation

Individual support is no longer sufficient as we face escalating levels of threat and risk to these languages. It is imperative that we take a unified and collective stand in solidarity with these indigenous communities to prompt a decisive call to action.
